You are thirteen, ready to get married, they said;
“Yes”, she nodded her head;
But, her heart screamed a “NO” and filled her with dread…
You are married, so don’t talk to men, they said;
“Yes”, she nodded her head;
But, her heart screamed a “NO” and filled her with dread…
You are a woman of duty, so quit studying, they said;
“Yes”, she nodded her head;
But, her heart screamed a “NO” and filled her with dread…
You are my wife; Give me pleasure, her husband said;
“Yes”, she nodded her head;
But, her heart screamed a “NO” and filled her with dread…
“You are pregnant at fifteen. Lucky You!!!”, the oldest lady of the house said
“Yes”, she nodded her head;
But, her heart screamed a “NO” and filled her with dread…
“It’s a Girl and we should abandon it”, they said;
“Yes”, she nodded her head;
But, her heart screamed a “NO” and filled her with dread…
“I will take another wife to give me a son”, her husband said;
“Yes”, she nodded her head;
But, her heart screamed a “NO” and filled her with dread…
But, her times were to change;
And, her troubles were to fly out of her range;
“You should resume studies”, her learned brother said
“No”, she nodded her head;
Knowing fully well that if it became known, she would be dead…
“It will be done secretly”, he said;
“No.. Not possible”, she nodded her head;
“Do it, please”, her heart pled…
So, the gates of education were thrown open to her;
Courage and confidence were all set for her, to lure…
“Write your story to inspire”, her peers said;
“Yes”, she nodded her head;
The world needed to know her story; it should spread…
She is a writer, now;
She lost her husband to his ego, but, there are thousands of others to show her their love…

Note from the author:
This poem is an account of certain realities which, unfortunately happen in some parts of the world.
This is merely a depiction of reality mixed with tinges of creativity.
Who is the woman in the poem? I really don’t know.
She exists, somewhere , in some part of the world.. Maybe, even in India…
